What is Spades?

Spades is a trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships. Spades (♠) are always trump, meaning they beat any card from another suit. Partners sit across from each other and work together to make their combined bid.

The game is beloved for its perfect blend of skill and luck - you need to accurately assess your hand, communicate with your partner through your plays, and adapt to what your opponents do.

🃏
Card Ranking (High to Low)

Within each suit: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2

Spades beat ALL other suits!

Setup & Deal

  1. Form Teams
Partners sit across from each other. Team 1 is usually North-South, Team 2 is East-West.
  2. Determine First Dealer
Cut the deck - highest card deals first. The deal rotates clockwise each round.
  3. Shuffle & Cut
Dealer shuffles, player to the right cuts the deck.
  4. Deal All Cards
Deal all 52 cards face-down, one at a time clockwise. Each player receives exactly 13 cards.
💡
Pro Tip

Sort your hand by suit, then by rank within each suit. This makes it easier to plan your bidding and spot what you're missing.

The Bidding

Before playing, each player bids how many "tricks" they expect to win. This is crucial - your score depends on meeting your bid!

  1. Starting Clockwise
Starting with the player left of the dealer, each player announces their bid (0-13).
  2. Make Your Commitment
Your bid is a promise - "I will win at least this many tricks."
  3. Team Bids Add Together
Example: You bid 4, partner bids 3 = team bid of 7. You must win at least 7 tricks combined.

What to Bid - Count Your "Sure Tricks"

  • High spades (A♠, K♠, Q♠) are nearly guaranteed wins
  • Aces in other suits usually win unless trumped
  • Kings with backup in the same suit often win
  • Void suits (suits you don't have) let you trump in
  • Long suits (5+ cards) often produce extra tricks
📝
Example Bidding

Your hand: A♠ K♠ 4♠ | A♥ K♥ 7♥ 3♥ | Q♦ 8♦ | K♣ J♣ 6♣ 2♣

Count: 2 high spades + A♥ = 3 sure tricks. K♥ and K♣ might win. Bid: 4-5

Special Bids

NIL - Bid Zero Tricks

A Nil bid means you promise to take ZERO tricks. High risk, high reward:

  • Nil Made (won 0 tricks): +100 points
  • Nil Failed (won any tricks): -100 points

Your partner still tries to make their bid separately.

BLIND NIL - Bid Before Looking

Blind Nil is bid BEFORE looking at your cards. Double stakes!

  • Blind Nil Made: +200 points
  • Blind Nil Failed: -200 points

Usually only allowed when your team is behind by 100+ points.

Playing the Game

The Rules of Play

  1. Lead: Player left of dealer leads the first trick (cannot lead spades first unless "broken")
  2. Follow suit: You MUST play a card of the same suit that was led, if you have one
  3. Can't follow? If you can't follow suit, you may play any card (including spades/trump)
  4. Winning: Highest card of the led suit wins, UNLESS a spade was played - then highest spade wins
  5. Winner leads: Winner of the trick leads the next trick
  6. Breaking spades: Once someone plays a spade (because they couldn't follow suit), spades can be led

Card Ranking

Example Trick

Player A (leads)
7
Player B
K

Player C
3
Can't follow, plays trump - NOW WINNING!
Player D
2
Following suit, but spade still wins
Winner: Player C with just the 3♠! Even a low spade beats any heart.

Making Your Bid

If your team takes at least as many tricks as you bid:

  • Base Score = Bid × 10 points
  • Overtricks (Bags) = +1 point each, but they accumulate!
Example: Team bids 7, wins 8 tricks
Base score (7 × 10) +70
Overtricks (1 bag) +1
Round Total +71

Getting SET (Missing Your Bid)

If your team takes fewer tricks than bid:

  • Score = Bid × -10 (negative!)
  • You get nothing for tricks taken
Example: Team bids 7, wins only 5 tricks
Set penalty (7 × -10) -70
Tricks won +0
Round Total -70
⚠️
This is called getting "SET"

Getting set is devastating! Better to bid conservatively than risk a big negative score.

The Bag Penalty

Bags (overtricks) accumulate across rounds. When you hit 10 bags:

  • -100 point penalty
  • Bags reset to 0 (or the overflow)
Example: Team has 8 bags, bids 5, wins 7
Base score (5 × 10) +50
Overtricks (+2 bags) +2
BAG PENALTY (8+2=10 bags!) -100
Round Total -48
Bags after reset 0
💡
Strategy Tip

When at 8-9 bags, sometimes it's better to deliberately lose tricks than accumulate bags. Let your opponents take tricks you don't need!

Nil Scoring

Nil bids are scored separately from your partner's bid.

Regular Nil - Made (0 tricks taken)
Nil bonus +100
Regular Nil - Failed (took 1+ tricks)
Nil penalty -100
Blind Nil - Made
Blind Nil bonus +200
Blind Nil - Failed
Blind Nil penalty -200

Complete Nil Example

Team A: Player 1 bids Nil, Player 2 bids 5
Player 1 tricks 0 (Nil made!)
Player 2 tricks 6
Nil bonus +100
Partner's bid (5 × 10) +50
Partner's overtrick (1 bag) +1
Team A Total +151

Full Round Example

Round 1 - The Bids
Team A bids 4 + 3 = 7
Team B bids 3 + 3 = 6
Results - Team A wins 8 tricks
Made bid +1 (7 × 10 + 1) +71
Bags accumulated 1
Results - Team B wins 5 tricks
SET! (6 × -10) -60

Winning the Game

First team to reach 500 points wins!

  • If both teams pass 500 in the same round, higher score wins
  • Some play to 300, 400, or custom amounts
  • Scores can go negative - some house rules eliminate a team at -200

Common House Rules

Spades has many regional variations. Here are the most common house rules you might encounter:

Bag Penalty Variations

  • 10 bags = -100 (Standard)
  • 5 bags = -50 (Stricter - faster penalty)
  • No bag penalty (Casual play)

Nil Variations

  • Standard: +100/-100
  • High stakes: +150/-150
  • Low stakes: +50/-50
  • No Nil allowed - Must bid at least 1

Blind Nil Rules

  • Standard: +200/-200
  • Only when behind: Can only bid Blind Nil if losing by 100+ points
  • Not allowed: Some groups don't play Blind Nil at all

Special Bonuses

10-for-200 Rule
  • Bid exactly 10 as a team
  • Make EXACTLY 10 (no overtricks!)
  • Score +200 instead of +100
Boston (Moon)
  • Win all 13 tricks as a team
  • Bonus +200 points (on top of regular score)
  • Very rare but devastating when achieved!
Minimum Bid Rules
  • No minimum - Can bid 0 without going Nil
  • Minimum 3 - Team must bid at least 3 combined
  • Minimum 4 - Team must bid at least 4 combined
  • "Board" rule - Total of all bids must hit a minimum
Jokers Variant

Some play with 2 jokers as the highest spades:

  • Big Joker (highest card in game)
  • Little Joker
  • A♠ (now third highest)

Remove the 2♦ and 2♣ to keep 52 cards.

Bidding Tips

  1. Count Your Sure Tricks
Aces and high spades are nearly guaranteed. Kings with backup cards often win too.
  2. Add for Long Spade Suits
5+ spades often means extra tricks as you exhaust others' spades.
  3. When in Doubt, Bid Low
A bag or two is better than getting SET. Conservative bidding wins games.
  4. Communicate Through Play
You can't talk about your hand, but your plays send signals to your partner.

When to Bid Nil

Consider Nil when you have:

  • No spades higher than 6 or 7
  • No Aces or Kings (or just one vulnerable one)
  • Several very low cards (2s, 3s, 4s)
  • A partner who can "cover" you by taking tricks
  • Your team is behind and needs a swing
🎯
Partner's Role in Nil

When your partner bids Nil, lead LOW cards in suits where they might have high ones. Your job is to take tricks that might otherwise go to them!

Playing Tips

  1. Lead Your Partner's Strong Suit
Pay attention to what suits your partner plays high cards in - lead those suits to set them up for wins.
  2. Don't Lead Aces Early
Save your Aces for when you need to win important tricks or regain the lead.
  3. Count Cards
Track what's been played, especially high spades. Know when your middle cards become winners.
  4. Watch for Short-Suited Players
If someone discards early in a suit, they're void - expect them to trump next time.
  5. Support Your Partner
If your partner is winning the trick, don't waste your high cards on top. Save them!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Overbidding

New players often bid their "maybes" as sure things. That K♥ won't win if someone is void in hearts and trumps it!

Ignoring Bags Until Too Late

Taking "just a few" extra tricks each round adds up fast. At 8-9 bags, actively try to lose tricks!

Breaking Spades Too Early

Trumping in early wastes your spades. Try to save them for when you really need to win a trick.

Forgetting to Cover Partner's Nil

When partner bids Nil, lead LOW cards in their dangerous suits. Don't leave them stranded with high cards!

Advanced Strategies

Reading the Table

  • If opponents bid low, they have weak hands - push them!
  • If combined bids exceed 13, someone's getting set
  • Watch for tells when opponents seem nervous about their bid

Controlling the Lead

  • Lead suits where your partner is strong
  • Avoid leading suits where opponents showed strength
  • Force opponents to break spades by leading their short suits

Bag Management

When approaching 10 bags:

  • Bid slightly higher than normal to reduce overtricks
  • Play to lose tricks once you've made your bid
  • Let opponents win - even if they don't need those tricks
